Looking for a baby footmuff for winter? Here’s what to look for to keep little ones warm, comfortable and protected, without adding unnecessary bulk to the pram.
A footmuff probably isn't the most exciting thing in a parent's wardrobe. Until winter arrives and suddenly the daily walk involves another layer, another blanket, a wriggly baby and the question of whether they're actually warm enough. When the weather turns wet and windy, keeping little ones cosy in the pram becomes a little more complicated.
A good baby footmuff should make all of this easier. It should keep your little one warm and protected from the elements, work with your pram and harness, be easy to use when you're rushing out the door and, ideally, survive everything that comes with everyday family life.
So, what should you actually look for in a winter footmuff?
What should you look for in a baby footmuff?
Not all footmuffs are designed in the same way, and the best one for you will depend on your pram, your lifestyle and how much time you spend outdoors.
There are a few things worth considering.
1. Warmth without too much bulk
Babies need to stay warm, but that doesn't mean wrapping them in something enormous.
Look for a footmuff with good insulation that provides warmth without making the pram feel overly bulky. Lightweight insulation can be particularly useful if you're using the footmuff every day, rather than only on the coldest days.
The front of our Baby Footmuff is hand-stuffed with featherlight 100% recycled polyester fill, creating a soft, lofty feel without unnecessary weight. Lightweight recycled padding through the back keeps the whole thing comfortable and streamlined.
2. Waterproof and wind-resistant protection
If you're planning to use your footmuff throughout autumn and winter, a weather-resistant outer can make a huge difference. Look for waterproof or shower-resistant fabrics, taped seams and some protection from the wind.
Our Baby Footmuff has a 100% recycled polyester outer with fully taped seams and waterproof protection up to 10,000mm, alongside wind-resistant construction.
So whether you're heading out in drizzle, caught in a proper downpour or simply dealing with a chilly, blustery day, the weather stays on the outside.
3. A soft, breathable lining
The outside of a footmuff needs to protect against the weather, but the inside is all about comfort.
A soft, breathable lining helps prevent your little one from feeling too hot or restricted, while a cosy trim around the hood can add another layer of warmth.
Our footmuff has a soft jersey lining throughout, with an ultra-soft sherpa trim around the hood for that extra cosy feeling.
4. Make sure it's compatible with your harness
This one is easy to overlook until you actually try to attach your footmuff to the pram.
Check that the footmuff is designed to work with your pram's harness system and that the openings give you enough flexibility as your baby grows.
Our Baby Footmuff is compatible with 3–5 point harness systems, making it suitable for a wide range of prams and pushchairs.
5. Look for clever details that make everyday life easier
A footmuff might look simple, but the little details can make a surprisingly big difference.
Can the front be opened easily? Can you get your baby in and out without wrestling with the whole thing? Can it adapt when the weather changes?
We wanted our Footmuff to do more than simply keep little legs warm.
Its all-around zip means the front can be completely removed, allowing the Footmuff to become a snug pram seat liner when you don't need the extra coverage.
And there's another little trick.
When you're out and about and a nappy change happens at exactly the wrong moment, the detachable front can also be used as an impromptu changing mat.
Not something you necessarily expect from a footmuff. But something you'll probably be very glad to have.
6. Can you actually wash it?
This might be one of the most important questions of all.
Baby kit gets messy. Muddy shoes, dropped snacks, spilled drinks and all the other little surprises that come with getting outside with a baby are inevitable.
Our Baby Footmuff is machine washable at 30°C, so it can go straight in the wash when it needs a refresh.
What about keeping parents warm?
There's one slight flaw with keeping your baby beautifully cosy in their footmuff.
The person pushing the pram can still have freezing hands. So, naturally, we made something for that too.

Our new Pram Hand Warmers attach directly to the pram handlebar with Velcro, giving you somewhere warm to put your hands whenever the temperature drops.
They're made with a 100% recycled polyester waterproof outer, fully taped seams and 10,000mm waterproof protection, with a cloud-soft sherpa fleece lining inside.
They're also wind-resistant and PFC-free, with easy slip-in, slip-out access so you can get your hands out whenever you need to.
No gloves to wrestle with and you don't have to constantly take them on and off.
Just warm hands and a slightly happier person pushing the pram.
From keeping tiny toes warm on frosty morning walks to protecting little ones from the rain, and keeping the person pushing the pram cosy too, every detail has been designed around real family life.
Because winter shouldn’t mean staying inside. It just means being a little more TÖASTIE.
